Heading into Our Kentucky Home.

It was a wicked night for sleeping in Grand Tower Ill last night as the air was thick and no breeze to speak of.  The Barges and trains work 24 hours a day.Once the sun went down it did cool off a bit but still pretty stiffling air.

The guys got up and started riding around 7 am to try to beat the heat.  It was a foggy start and they had a hard time with visisbility for the 1st 5 miles or so.I stayed back and made sandwiches and rearranged Mini Pearl.  I then headed out of  Devils  Backbone park to meet up with the guys.

They had nice roads all morning with no traffic. The morning ride was fairly flat. Then Dave and I switched and headed into some rolling hills.  It was actually quite fun.  The roads we excellent. You could see as we headed into the south that some of the areas were a little depressed we came through a town of Mounds that had lots old beautiful architecture.  Both homes and government bldgs alike, but they were pretty run down or condemned.  You could see that it was once a thriving community at one time.

As we came through another town called Cairo you could see the same thing.  There was a beautiful historic section of town that had lots of nice architecture, old mansions with a split blvd with trees in the middle and cobblestone on each side.  The lane was probably impeccable in it's day!  A few of the homes were kept up but majority were not.

Terry and I then literally came to a fork in the road.  If you took the bridge on the right you crossed the Mississippi and went into Missouri.  If you crossed the bridge on the left you went over the Ohio river and went into Kentucky.  So we took door # 2 and came into Kentucky. It was beautiful new black through long winding wooded areas.

We ended the day in the historic Belmont Campsite in Kentucky once again overlooking the Mississippi River.  We have a nice campsite with Laundry facilities and really nice showers.   We cooked on the Jenn air again and had grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.

The air seems to be cooler tonight but the large Hungry Mosquitos are starting to attack.  I think they have a Mn, Accent.

Well we are out of daylight and we have a 115 mile day tomorrow so we want to get another early start.

So good night to all!!!!

Dave, Terry & Julie

  4. Beware of Kentucky road kill!!! On a recent road trip there, I saw a lot of it, including razor backs!!! That was not in my Minnesota paradigm. Great pictures, BTW. Who's the photographer?
